It just seemed appropriate to share a quote with you from a book that helped change my niece’s life and turn her life around. It goes like this:
“Of all the beautiful truths pertaining to the soul (which have been restored and brought to light in this age), none is more gladdening or fruitful of divine promise and confidence than this--that man is the master of thought, the molder of character, and the maker and shaper of condition, environment, and destiny.”
Now, I know that sounds a little deep, but stay with me…it’s an incredible book!
Those prolific words were written by James Allen, and they appear in his book entitled AS A MAN THINKETH. He was a literary mystery man born in England in 1864 whose inspirational writings have influenced millions for good. This virtual unknown, who was probably one of the greatest writers of the last century, is also credited with saying,
“Circumstances don’t make the man, they reveal him.”
My niece was pretty bad off when she was 21 years old, having dropped out of college with no car, job or driver’s license (after getting her second DUI). She stayed pretty secluded in her mother’s townhome, her future was not looking very bright and getting pregnant made things seem dimmer.
To help, I sent her three inspirational books to read and, much to my shock and surprise, she chose this one first: AS A MAN THINKETH. Her written summary of it was tear-jerking because it really helped her take responsibility for her life and her own thinking and it sparked major changes in her behavior. With the additional motivation of being a parent, she changed her thinking and took massive action and her career took off!
Anyone who has given up total control of their lives to someone other than themselves, to any outside people or forces, is making a terrible mistake. If you have given up the dreams of your youth, if you’ve lost that sparkle in your eye or that confidence in your voice about your future, do not despair. So much is still in your control, happiness and abundance is all still available to you. The hopes, the dreams, the ambitions that you knew perhaps in younger years can be attained. Look around you, at all the other people that are doing it. You have just as much right and access to that abundance as anyone else!
My niece has been a classic example of an American Success Story that is not quite as extreme as from rags to riches, but close. Eventually getting into sales, and now with two children and still on her own, she bought her own place, sent her kids to Catholic school and, I must admit, she has earned more some years than her teacher! She changed her thinking – and doing – and changed her life! If you haven’t read this little book, I highly recommend it. We do have them in stock if you’d like to order a copy?
Remember the words of Earl Nightingale who said, “We become what we think about.” A similar quote can be found in the Book of Proverbs: “As a Man Thinketh, so is he.”
