Hi, I’m Mickey Straub and welcome to SAM Moments™.
Ten years ago this year, I published an article in the GAMA Journal called Have I Got N.E.W.S. for You! in order to help people Get Rid of Back Pain…and live Healthier lives. It was on my list of good intentions to write about it for seven years, until finally, I met a woman at a State Farm meeting with back problems who inspired me to finish it. I thought, “Why keep it a secret when so many people can benefit?”
You might be wondering, “What does this have to do with Activity Management?” In a word, Everything!
I had suffered from back pain since college. During my twenties and thirties, I went to a Chiropractor for years until the pain, discomfort and sometimes being totally incapacitated, became so bad that I finally sought more aggressive medical treatment including CT Scan, which showed that I had a Bulging Disk, Stenosis and possible arthritis! My prognosis was not good but, frankly, I didn’t get any advice on HOW to fix it!!
Finally, I was literally laying on the floor of our guest bedroom, barely able to crawl to the bathroom…when I came to the realization that I had to accept responsibility and change my behavior, or I was going to have pain the rest of my life!
As strange as it sounds, the answer just came to me while laying on the floor in the form of an acronym to make it easy for people to remember: N.E.W.S. And I have to tell you that, after 20 years of suffering and using this guideline for the last 17 years, I’ve had little or no backpain since.
We’re not going to have a lot of time to go through much detail. If you want to read more about, I have a copy of it on my own personal page at www.MickeyStraub.com or you can email me and I’ll send it. GAMA may also have it in their archives on their website? Here is what each letter stands for:
The cool thing about it is we have pretty much total control over them by controlling our daily activities.
Seventeen years have gone by and I continue to rely upon this simple formula to live a healthier life. I am thankful they arrived in the form of an acronym, so that it is easier to remember the four key areas of my life that I need to keep in-check. They have been a Godsend. But again, we can control most of it if we control our activities and we accept responsibility for it.
Please let me know if you want a copy of the article or go to the website. I hope those four things help you live a healthier life. Improving Nutrition, Exercise, Weight and Stress may not relieve everyone’s back pain, but if you’re looking to live a more balanced, healthier life overall, “Have I got N.E.W.S. for You!”
