Mickey’s Corner: My Mid-Life Crisis

Fifty is a Big Year! Maybe you have already turned it? If not, hopefully you’ll be blessed to one day. It certainly is a milestone and one that makes many of us stop, reflect and re-prioritize.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to react when I turned the big “5-0″ in February. Should I run out and buy the sports car that I always wanted? (Truth be told, I already have one, or maybe a couple or so?) Is it time to get a girlfriend? Well, that is not an option. (My wife would never approve.) Besides, “What would I do with two women, when one is tough enough for me to handle?”

Actually, three things hit me when I turned 50. Number one, I was officially middle-aged, since my goal has always been to live to be 100. Second, I was half-way home. And thirdly, I better take better care of myself.

There are a lot of things we can do to take better care of ourselves, like improve our diet, get more sleep, and minimize some of life’s little stresses for starters. But, when it comes to better overall health there are few things more important than taking better care of your heart and legs. (It’s funny how your priorities change. Like many guys growing up…my priorities used to be arms and chest.) I figured that if I was committed to reaching my goal, I better start now.

So, what did I run out and buy? Well, it was a Greg Lemond RevMaster spin-bike! It is low-impact, convenient, portable and compact, but what I like about it most is it can be a very efficient use of time since I can read or catch up on the news simultaneously. (I guess I’m hooked on optimizing time.)

Here’s to your heart, legs and good health. Stay inspired!
