Activity Management: Staying Motivated

Enablers! You need to surround yourself with enablers. What is an enabler? Besides the obvious negative connotation relating to addictive behavior an enabler, simply said, is someone or something that helps you stay focused toward and reach your goals.

People
You need to associate with people who can help you get better. While it is traditionally the role of your agency or team leader to manage and motivate you, sometimes you need to find someone else to help motivate you and drive you to success. This can come in the form of a mentor or coach.

Tools
You need an assortment of tools, the right tools, to act as enablers.

  • ScorekeepingUse a simple system that gives you hope by keeping your goals in front of you at all times (a visual reminder) and a path to follow by providing the roadmap to reach your goals and achieve success.
  • MantrasMantras, positive self-talk that keeps you going; e.g., “Show them that you’re tougher than the rest”, “Extend yourself”, “Be relentless”, or “Focus on the competition”.
  • RoutinesRoutines or rituals can help you start your day and stay on track; e.g., review your daily goals, play your favorite CD or create a play list for your MP3 player, spend 30 minutes a day reading a motivational book (shoot for finishing one per month), Dont forget to reward yourself for completing your tasks and/or achieving your goals.

Organizations and Causes
Industry related or not, Organizations you belong to and Causes that you volunteer time to support can act as a source of strength and motivation to enable your success.

Ultimately, it is up to you to determine what enablers work best for you, but it all comes down to being accountable and your success depends on your ability to focus your efforts, day in and day out, on the high impact activities that lead to it.
