ON THE BRIGHT SIDE: Laid-Off Worker Creates “We’ve Got Time To Help” Volunteer Group

Since too much of the news these days is negative, we decided to start spreading good news. If you have positive, good news to share, let us know.

When Seth Reams of Portland, Ore. lost his job several months ago, he soon realized that job hunting was not going to fill the void he felt from his job loss. “I felt like I wasn’t a member of society anymore, like I wasn’t contributing to this household anymore,” Reams said.  Reams knew that while he was out of work, he had plenty of time to help the people who needed it, and so he created a new blog, ‘We’ve Got Time to Help’ to organize local people to take part in volunteer opportunities.

With more than 100 members, these unemployed volunteers have made positive impacts throughout their community, doing everything from yard work for a woman with multiple sclerosis to collecting dog toys and food to give to an animal shelter. Although Reams’ work with We’ve Got Time to Help doesn’t pay, he believes the affect it’s had on his outlook is invaluable. “I feel like I’m doing something worthwhile. I’m busy every day with calls and e-mails and projects. It’s re-instilled a faith in humanity.”
